Finders Keepers....

On our way back home yesterday, my sweet twin asked if I would like to stop by the Red Barn Antiques in Upper Jay.

Hmmm, let me think about that for a minute.

Um, yes PLEASE!

She was so sweet to humor me by looking through the rooms filled with all sorts of goodies with me.

The sign did not lie, there was a whole room FILLED with vintage books, all leather bound and old.  Their pages tattered and worn, absorbed of so many years of smells from the many places that they had been.

But as sweet and lovely as those books were, they were nothing in comparison with the finds that filled my arms as I walked out the door.

Deer are a theme in our house, and not just because we live in the Adirondacks.  I just could not pass by this pewter plate sitting on a glass case in the barn.

The detail is amazing.  There is a hook on it's back and my mind's eye knows just the spot for it in our bedroom, once we have redone our walls.

And then this little lovey caught my eye.  All hand painted and rosey.

How could it not come home with me

to join my collection of pink and green painted dessert dishes that found me a few weeks ago.

I have a wall in mind for this collection as well.  In my sewing room, opposite the bookcase.

And just as I was leaving, I saw 2 teeny Atlas jars filled with buttons waving frantically in my direction.

How did I miss those on my way in?

They each had a tag.... "Buttons-$2.00".

And so I asked the clerk " How much would you sell just the jars that are holding the buttons for?"

And she replied " The price is for the jar AND the buttons."

So I scooped them up; walked over to the counter; set them down and said "Sold."

When I got home, I emptied the buttons onto my sewing table.

And while all of my jars (new and old) got all sudsy from a much needed bath.

I looked through the buttons...Since I didn't buy the jars for the buttons, and I rarely use them in my sewing.

I had an idea.

Giveaway time....

I am going to split these buttons into 5 piles and send them off to 5 random people who comment.

I will let you know the winners on Thursday.... a present for you on my boy's Fifth birthday.

Oh, pick me!! I grew up in Vermont and my family took many a trip driving through the Adirondaks in upstate New York. Your blog makes me think of all the tiny towns on HUGE lakes that we would stop in. Just this morning I went through my button stash and picked some for my swap partner. I don't think there is such a thing as too many buttons! Totally unrelated, my little bean recently turned five and to celebrate we stayed at a hotel with a water park!

OK, I can feel the jealousy oozing from me over those rose plates. So lovely.

I have a dream of one day going through the Northeast antique stores together with limits amount of cash :)

Yes, how could you possibly have left that plate behind. It would have been so lonely, but now it's cozy and comfy with its new friends. :) I love the jars, too. (Oh, and thanks for the giveaway!)

YOU ARE WELCOME! Don't enter me though, first I would have to know how to make a button hole! LOL

Oh, thank you for the fun! We sew buttons on just about everything around here. Or my son just makes a string of them for fun. He asked me to make him a 10-button vest and so I did. He told me today that it's just too much to button and that I should turn it into a dress for his sister. Hee.

I love buttons! I was just lamenting the other day that I was too young when my Great Aunt died to insist on getting her button collection. This is a wonderful idea.

i serendipitously linked through to you from heather's shivaya naturals. i was reading through joyfully reading of your jar of buttons (i bought a similar jar full of buttons recently at the antique market) and then read on that your little one just turned 5. (happy birthday!) mine did too. so i am happy to say hi and throw my name in the pot for more buttons! :)

Oh man! I don't know if I've ever found such a deal on buttons. I just put my last 'set' of somewhat matching buttons on a baby sweater for a friend. *cough* I sure could use some replacements *cough*

that pewter plate is beautiful! $2.00 for those jars filled with buttons was a great find. I was looking at an antique collective yesterday and a small baby food container with buttons was $2.00. Larger jars were going for $8-10.

I adore buttons!

Jars are a weakness of mine, also! I'd even keep the washed spaghetti, salsa, etc. jars if I had the storage space. ;)
