I was in need of some more fabric....
The new rug is coming along....ummm.
Slowly.
I just didn't have any scrap fabric in the colors that I was craving. And I'll be darned if I was going to cut up some of my most favorite prints.
Luckily, the Thrift Store had a few pretty sheets that came home with me. But they were white and not exactly ideal for the making of something to go underfoot.
White+ Rug = NIGHTMARE ( just speaking from past experiences)
I thought about it for a bit and decided to try something new...something that I had been meaning to try for a while now....
Fabric Dying.
I had a big stainless steel bowl, a box of purple Rit dye, and being a nurse, I happened to have a few rubber gloves (you know, just hanging around) for the process.
I started with the twin white floral sheet and let it soak for about 5 minutes.
It came out beautifully.
Then I cut the Queen sheet and dyed half of it (I plan on using the white print for some other project).
I only let this one soak for 2 minutes for a paler purple.
I had also gotten 2 yellow cafe curtains at the thrift store that I dyed one of to see how the yellow took to the purple....it took it better than I thought that it would.
I really liked it.
And all of that newly dyed fabric combined with the above 10 yards of cheap cotton from Walmart and I had all of the colors that I was envisioning in this rug.
So now, a majority of that fabric has been torn into lengths of strips, rolled into balls and is sitting in a basket in my sewing room, just waiting for me to have my next day off.
I'm working for the next 3 days, but I'll be back on Sunday....I hope that you all have a wonderful weekend.
